Amelia

Daisypath Happy Birthday tickers

This blog captures my thoughts and observations of Amelia since there are so many wonderful things I want to just bottle and enjoy. Time doesn't stop and while I will have memories, it will be nice for both her and me to have these in-the-moment snapshots of her life.

Are we traffic?

I don't know where Amelia got the idea of traffic - probably a comment Daddy made to her while they were driving one day. (Most likely to the pay-n-spray carwash.) I used to live (and commute) in the D.C. area and Southern California and there is nothing here that resembles what I consider traffic. So it's hilarious to me to hear her ask me in the morning on the way to Nana's if we are traffic. I try to explain the concept to her that you can be 'in traffic' if there are a lot of cars going the same way you are, but she keeps asking if we are traffic.

I guess since we are in a car and cars make up traffic we are, in a way, traffic. When I have these conversations with her where we talk about something and she isn't exactly wrong but she's not exactly right in the commonly held perception of things, I have vague flashbacks to my college philosophy class where Dr. Smythe put items together on a clipboard and asked if they were one item or several items, then took them off one at a time and proceeded to lead a discussion about why or why not they were a single item or individual items. If they are all together, are they a single item? But what thenk if they are separated, one on a windowsill, one on the desk, one in his hand, etc.? How could they be both individual items and one single item, just based on location?

That is to say, every time Amelia asks about traffic, I begin to feel slightly confused and my head starts to hurt just a little bit as I wonder if there even is a right answer. So I try to change the subject. Which isn't easy with her!
